EVIDENCE OF EXCELLENCE AWARDS, 2007Michigan Association of School Personnel AdministratorsOnce again it is time to look around the State and point to the “very best” school personnel administrators and Human Resources practices or programs. The 2007 Evidence of Excellence Awards for MASPA members and programs will be presented at the 35th Annual Winter Conference at the Lansing Sheraton this December 2007. Last year, MASPA recognized Terry Serbin, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Labor Relations in the Monroe Public Schools, as the “Outstanding Human Resources Administrator.” Terry was also nominated for this honor with the national organization, AASPA. MASPA also awarded the “Best Practices in HR Award” to Utica Community Schools for their comprehensive teacher induction program. Utica’s inclusive program is a collaborative effort among the HR department, curriculum office and teacher’s union that provides an outstanding framework for training, supporting and retaining new teachers. So, look around you. Point to that outstanding personnel / human resources administrator or examine that program or practice in your district from which our colleagues can emulate and learn. Point to and nominate that administrator or best practice in the State. The first award is the MASPA Outstanding Personnel Administrator of the Year Award. This award will be given to a practicing professional who possesses the qualities and skills most often demonstrated by an outstanding personnel administrator. This administrator is a leader who has distinguished him/herself in the field and at all levels of involvement: local, state, and/or national and whose contributions have made a significant impact on public education. This is a current administrator who is creative in his/her approach to personnel work and is respected by his/her peers. For the OUTSTANDING PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR aware, included separate sheets describing the nominee in the following categories: (1) professional growth experience; i.e. - positions held; (2) professional memberships and offices held; (3) contributions to publications and presentations to the field of human resources and personnel services; (4) outstanding contributions to the field of human resources and personnel services, especially in Michigan; and (5) any other documentation included on a separate sheet describing how the nominee has distinguished him/herself in school personnel work. Reference letters from supervisors or colleagues should be included to support the nomination. The second award will be given to the school district (and personnel administrator) that has developed an outstanding solution to a personnel problem or to the development of an innovative program specifically in the area of human resources or personnel services. The MASPA Best Practices in HR Award will be given to a program that was established during the past year in any creative or innovative area of human resources development. Examples of such program could be in teacher recruitment, professional development, health benefit containment, evaluation, or teacher induction programs. For the BEST PRACTICES IN HUMAN RESOURCES AWARD, in a separate attachment, the nomination should include: (1) a description of the outstanding program based upon best personnel practices; (2) who the program or activity affects and benefits; (3) the outcome or results of putting such an innovative program in place – how does the school district benefit from this program; and (4) any other supporting documentation or testimony of excellence from administrators or union leadership, supporting the nomination. Included in this newsletter is a general nomination form that would be used for both the administrator or program nominations. This form needs to be completed and sent to Ray Bihun, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, 454 S. Harvey St., Plymouth, MI 48170 by November 1, 2007. The recognition committee will review all submissions and select an award winner from each category. These awards will be given during the luncheon ceremonies at the 35th annual Winter Conference at the Lansing Sheraton from December 6, 2007. The general nomination form and attached paperwork must be submitted to Ray Bihun by November 1, 2007. |
